What Is Keyword Research?

Keyword research is the process of discovering and analyzing the search terms people type into search engines, then using that data to guide your content and SEO strategy.

Why it matters

Keyword research is the foundation of every successful SEO campaign. It reveals what your audience actually wants, how much demand exists (search volume), how hard each term is to rank for (keyword difficulty), and what the searcher intends to do (search intent). Targeting the wrong keywords wastes months of effort, so this step comes before writing a single page.

Example

A plumber might discover that “emergency plumber near me” has high commercial intent and strong volume, while “how a toilet works” is high-volume but purely informational — useful for a blog post, not a service page.

The keyword research process

A repeatable keyword research process looks like this:

  1. Brainstorm seed topics your customers actually care about.
  2. Expand them into keyword lists using tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or Semrush.
  3. Analyze search volume, keyword difficulty, and commercial value (CPC).
  4. Identify the search intent behind each term — informational, commercial, or transactional.
  5. Group keywords into topic clusters and map each cluster to a page.
