What Is Quality Score?

Quality Score is a Google Ads metric, rated from 1 to 10, that estimates how relevant your keywords, ads, and landing pages are to a searcher. It is built from expected click-through rate, ad relevance, and landing page experience, and directly influences your ad rank and cost.

Why it matters

Quality Score matters because it decides how much you pay and where your ads appear. A higher score signals to Google that your ad is genuinely relevant, so you earn better positions at a lower cost per click, while low scores mean paying more for worse placement. Improving it — through tighter keyword grouping, compelling ad copy, and fast, relevant landing pages — stretches your budget further and lifts the overall efficiency of every campaign.

Example

An advertiser splits a broad ad group into tightly themed keywords, writes ad copy that mirrors each search, and points clicks to a fast, matching landing page. Google raises the Quality Score from 4 to 8. The higher score cuts the cost per click by roughly a third, so the same budget now delivers more clicks and leads.
