What Is Keyword Cannibalization?
Keyword cannibalization occurs when two or more pages on the same website target and compete for the same keyword, causing them to undermine each other’s ranking potential.
Why it matters
When several pages chase one keyword, Google struggles to decide which is most relevant, so it may rank the wrong page, split link equity between them, or rank both lower than a single strong page would rank. This dilutes your authority and confuses users. Fixing it — by consolidating, merging, or re-targeting pages — often produces quick ranking gains.
Example
If a site has three separate blog posts all optimized for “best SEO tools,” they compete against each other. Merging them into one comprehensive guide and redirecting the others usually lifts the surviving page.
