What Is a Featured Snippet?

A featured snippet is a highlighted answer box that appears at the top of some Google search results — often called “position zero” — pulling a concise answer directly from a web page.

Why it matters

Featured snippets capture a large share of clicks and are read aloud by voice assistants, making them extremely valuable. They’re also the foundation of AI-driven answers: content structured to win snippets is often the same content cited by AI Overviews and chatbots. Winning one can vault a page above the traditional #1 result.

Example

Snippets come in paragraph, list, table, and video formats. To win the query “how to do keyword research,” a numbered-list snippet works best — so structuring your steps as a clean ordered list gives you the best chance.

How to win a featured snippet

  • Target question-based and definitional queries.
  • Answer the question directly in about 40–60 words near the top of the page.
  • Match the format Google already shows for that query — paragraph, list, or table.
  • Use clear H2/H3 headings that mirror how people phrase the question.
  • Support the answer with accurate, well-structured content and schema where relevant.
