What Is Anchor Text?

Anchor text is the visible, clickable text of a hyperlink — usually shown underlined and in a different color. It tells both users and search engines what the linked page is about.

Why it matters

Anchor text gives search engines context about the destination page’s topic. Descriptive anchors (“beginner’s guide to PPC”) are far more useful than generic ones (“click here”). However, over-optimizing with too many exact-match keyword anchors pointing to the same page can look manipulative and trigger a Google penalty, so a natural mix is essential.

Example

Common anchor types include exact-match (“link building services”), partial-match (“affordable link building”), branded (“Digital Leap”), naked URL (“digitalleapmarketing.com”), and generic (“read more”). A healthy backlink profile blends all of these.
